Biography
Violinist Hongyi Mo is an acclaimed soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader, and recording artist whose playing has been praised for its “masterful performance,” “captivating atmosphere,” and “virtuosic command.” A longtime member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, he regularly serves as Acting Principal Second Violin and has performed in more than 3,000 concerts with the orchestra under many of the world’s leading conductors and soloists.
Mo first gained national recognition at the age of fifteen when he won the Gold Medal at the 1997 China National Violin Competition. Shortly afterward, he was invited to premiere Chang-Yuan Liu’s Psalm Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Zheng Xiaoyin. He later recorded the concerto with the China National Youth Orchestra conducted by Yu Feng. These early appearances led to invitations as a guest artist at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
As a soloist, Mo has appeared in recital and with orchestra in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His performance of Eugène Ysaÿe’s complete Six Sonatas for Solo Violin at the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy received a fifteen-minute standing ovation and was praised for its “engaging interpretations and virtuosic command.” Career highlights include his 2014 collaboration with Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins, as well as performances of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra.
Mo’s artistic work extends beyond the traditional concert stage. He served as Associate Concertmaster for Andrea Bocelli’s 30th Anniversary Concert and has performed in major cross-genre events, including the Michigan Central Station concert alongside Eminem. He has also worked closely with conductor Kurt Masur; violinists Pinchas Zukerman, Viviane Hagner, and Cho-Liang Lin; and numerous leading artists throughout his orchestral and chamber music career.
A committed chamber musician, Mo has collaborated with the Tokyo String Quartet, members of the American String Quartet, and colleagues from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has toured with Cho-Liang Lin and has appeared with ensembles and festivals in North America, Europe, and Asia. Earlier in his career, he served as concertmaster of the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Sinfonia, leading performances at Carnegie Hall and at the celebrated “Manhattan Takes Manhattan” event, which was featured in The New York Times. He has also held concertmaster positions with the Bowdoin Festival Orchestra, the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the China National Youth Orchestra.
In 2025, Mo released his debut album, Métamorphoses: Poulenc on Violin and Piano, on Azica Records, in collaboration with pianist John Etsell and two-time GRAMMY Award–winning producer Alan Bise. On the recording, Mo serves both as violinist and arranger, transforming a selection of Poulenc’s songs into new works for violin and piano alongside the composer’s Violin Sonata and Oboe Sonata. The album has been reviewed by Gramophone, featured in Strings Magazine, and covered by The Violin Channel and other international classical-music outlets.
Critical response to the recording has highlighted Mo’s distinctive sound and interpretive imagination. Reviewers have praised his “honeyed tone,” “organic” phrasing, and ability to reveal Poulenc’s emotional and literary depth through the violin. Strings Magazine described the album as “playful and tender, melancholic and luminous,” while other critics noted the warmth, sensitivity, and expressive intimacy of Mo and Etsell’s partnership.
Mo holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Michigan. His artistic development was shaped by studies with Yaoji Lin, Glenn Dicterow, Lisa Kim, and David Halen, as well as collaborations and coaching with David Kim, David Chan, Martin Chalifour, Salvatore Accardo, Gérard Poulet, and Kurt Sassmannshaus.
In addition to his performing career, Mo is an active teacher and mentor. He serves as a lecturer for the Lin Yaoji Teaching Method Promotion Platform and has taught and presented masterclasses at institutions including the University of Michigan, Interlochen Arts Academy, Beijing Capital Normal University, and the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic. His students have received national competition awards, entered leading conservatory and university programs, and earned positions in professional orchestras.
